Health First Holmes Regional Medical Center is proud to be the first on the Central East Coast of Florida to offer Radioembolization with both Therasphere or SIR-Spheres — innovative, new therapies that deliver radiation directly to tumors in the liver using tiny glass or resin beads called "microspheres".

What is Radioembolization (Y-90) and the other possible treatment for liver cancer?

Fortunately, many options exist today for the treatment of cancer. Your physicians will guide you through these various treatment methods including surgery, chemotherapy, percutaneous ablation, and catheter-directed treatment. The fundamental belief of Interventional Radiology and Oncology is that Radioembolization is a minimally invasive, highly-precise treatment for liver cancer.

Radioembolization is used to treat tumors that began in the liver or have spread (metastasized) to the liver. This treatment is a combination of radiation therapy and a minimally-invasive treatment called "embolization". Placing the radiation source directly in the tumor, allows for maximum treatment effect with relative sparing of normal liver tissue. Extensive experience already exists with this type of treatment for prostate cancer-known as prostate seed therapy or brachytherapy. We are now applying this concept to the treatment of liver cancer.
