Holmes Regional Trauma Center, in conjunction with the Pineda Harley-Davidson dealership, is sponsoring an upcoming Motorcycle Safety Day educational event to promote safe practices by motorcyclists. The event will take place at Pineda Harley-Davidson, 6030 N. US Highway 1, Melbourne, on Saturday, December 8, from 11 am to 3 pm.
The Motorcycle Safety Day event, which will include live music, entertainment, and free barbecue, is designed for all ages/ members of the family. Information will be available on helmet safety, passenger safety, defensive driving, and more. A drawing will be held to give away a Harley-Davidson Riders Edge course at the event.
Mark Clemens, director of Emergency Services for Holmes Regional Medical Center, noted that too often he and his staff members see the tragic results of motorcycle accidents. "At Holmes Regional Trauma Center, providing education that may prevent injuries and accidents is a critical component of our program," he said.
According to a National Highway Transportation Safety Administration study, motorcyclists are about 21 times as likely as passenger car occupants, per vehicle mile, to die in a traffic crash. Motorcycle rider fatalities now account for 11 percent of total fatalities. We want to do our part in reducing motorcycle fatalities and incapacitating injuries, said Clemens.
