Health First Wound Management Center to provide free foot checks for diabetic patients

Check available by appointments starting week of April 1

The staff of Health First Wound Management Center will be providing weekly diabetic foot screens at both its Palm Bay and Cocoa Beach locations, starting the week of April 1. These free diabetic foot checks are provided to patients who have been diagnosed by a physician with diabetes. Appointments are necessary and can be scheduled through the Health First Community Engagement Center at 321-434-4335.

According to Debbie Ravel, Manager of the Health First Wound Management Center, foot checks are very important for diabetics. "If diabetic patients don't check for signs of trouble daily, the consequences can range from infection to even amputation in extreme cases. By checking daily, patients can see any new wounds and monitor healing areas."

The foot checks will include an evaluation of circulation, temperature, and sensations, checking of toe nails, calluses, and any open sores. The check will also include patient education and recommendations on proper foot care.

All patients will receive a report that they can share with their personal physician.

The Health First Wound Management Center in Palm Bay is located at 5191 Babcock Street; the Cocoa Beach location is on the Cape Canaveral Hospital campus at 701 West Cocoa Beach Causeway.
