Jorge Salazar, MD, FACP
Dr. Salazar is a Board Certified Internal Medicine physician who practices General Internal Medicine and Primary Care. He sees patients in both the office and hospital setting. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Medical Anthropology from Hampshire College and a Medical Degree from the University of Miami. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency training at the University of North Carolina's unique Internal Medicine program in Greensboro. There, his standard Internal Medicine training was supplemented with special training in dermatology, gynecology, orthopedics/sports medicine, and office based medical procedures. Before coming to Melbourne to serve the medical needs of Brevard in 1993, Dr. Salazar was a partner in an Internal Medicine/Cardiology group in Miami Beach and practiced at the Mount Sinai Hospital and the Miami Heart Institute.
Besides his dedication to clinical practice, Dr. Salazar is an enthusiastic clinical investigator. He has been involved in medical research since serving as a research assistant for several Harvard Medical School clinical trials while in college. He has been an investigator in over 60 clinical research studies, serving as principal investigator for many. "Being involved in clinical research not only keeps me at the forefront of medicine, but it allows me to offer my patients tomorrow's treatments".
Throughout his career, Dr Salazar has attained many academic achievements. He has successfully maintained his board certification in Internal Medicine for over 22 years by successfully pursuing the American Board of Internal Medicine continuing education program and passing the rigorous Internal Medicine Board Certification Examination three separate times. He has received recognition certificates in the past and in October 2013 by The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for the Delivery of Quality Diabetes Care and for the Delivery of Quality Cardiovascular Care. He has been appointed Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine by the University of Central Florida School of Medicine. Dr. Salazar was also recently honored by election to Fellowship status in the American College of Physicians, denoting a high degree of achievement and dedication within the field of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Salazar is married to Jacqueline A. Salazar, DNP, ARNP. They have three children. He enjoys percussion, traveling and skiing. He is fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. While his family is from Cuba, he was born in Miami. He has lived in many different cities, including five years in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Dr. Salazar first became interested in becoming a doctor while doing mission work in rural Mexico when he was 16 years of age. He explains, "I saw so much suffering. I worked with a doctor and a nurse, who were able to help people out of their misery with compassion and medical treatment. I wanted to be part of that."
