Paul Thompson, MD shares his General Surgery practice with Alphonse Pecoraro, MD. Drs. Thompson and Pecoraro are members of Health First Physicians, a multi-specialty group practice in Central and South Brevard County, Florida and both are members of the Cape Canaveral Hospital Medical Staff. They operate exclusively at Cape Canaveral Hospital in Cocoa Beach.
Dr. Thompson's professional interests encompass the broad spectrum of General Surgery including surgery of the breast, colon, appendix, thyroid, parathyroid, gallbladder, and pancreas. Whenever possible, these operations are accomplished via less invasive, advanced laparoscopic techniques.
Dr. Thompson is a second-generation Central Brevard General Surgeon who has resided in our community since his parents moved here at the beginning of the Space Center boom in the early 1960's. He graduated from Rockledge High School in 1974 and attended Georgia Tech on a swimming scholarship.
During his four years at Georgia Tech, he established six varsity swimming records while obtaining his Bachelor's Degree (with Honors) in Physics.
Dr. Thompson received his Doctor of Medicine Degree three years later from the University of South Florida and then served a five-year General Surgery residency at the University of Texas in Galveston. While in Galveston, he authored numerous publications and received training in Critical Care, Pediatric Surgery, Burn Care, Transplant Surgery, and General Surgery. Shortly after completing his Residency, he was certified by the American Board of Surgery and has been re-certified twice.
Dr. Thompson has practiced General Surgery in Central Brevard since 1986 and has been a member of Health First Physicians since 2004. During his more than 25 years in practice, he has served in many hospital medical staff capacities, including two terms as Medical Staff President and serveral terms as Chairman of the Department of Surgery.
Dr. Thompson and his wife, Mindy, live on Merritt Island and have two children: Abbey and Eric. Abbey is working at the National Institutes of Health before starting her Genetics PhD. Eric is a biochemistry major at The University of Missouri. In his free time, Dr. Thompson enjoys swimming, running, and cycling and he and his family also enjoy boating, dining out, and traveling together.
