Do you suffer from swelling or chronic leg pain as a result of poor circulation? This can be a sign of a serious condition that requires the expertise of a Vascular Surgeon or Interventional Radiologist.
If you have leg pain, you may suffer from varicose veins, spider veins, Peripheral Arterial Disease or blood clots. Poor circulation can lead to swelling and aching and interfere with your normal activities.
PAD is a common condition that affects an estimated eight million Americans and occurs most often in the arteries of the legs. The buildup of plaque in arteries causes the arteries to harden and narrow, significantly reducing blood flow. This serious condition is called atherosclerosis (sometimes referred to as "hardening of the arteries" or "poor circulation"). The most common symptoms of PAD may include calf, thigh, or buttock muscle pain while walking (not night cramps) and is relieved with only a couple minutes of rest. Our physicians can review your history and risk factors and examine the pulses in your feet and legs. If your pulses are normal, you do not have PAD. If your pulses are weak or absent, you may have PAD and require further diagnostic studies.Blood Clots
Blood clots in the leg can be categorized into two groups: deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and superficial thrombophlebitis. DVTs are blood clots that develop in the deep veins of the leg. Superficial thrombophlebitis is when blood clots occur more superficially in your legs closer to the skin, causing inflammation in the blood vessels. Both of these conditions can cause pain and swelling. With a DVT, there may be color changes in the leg due to lack of circulation. Superficial thrombophlebitis, on the other hand, does not cut off circulation to the entire leg.
