Nearly 50% of women suffer from embarrassing spider veins. The good news is there are simple, effective cosmetic treatments right here at Health First that can get you loving the way your legs look and feel again.
Spider veins most often appear on legs as red and blue dilated blood vessels close to the top of the skin. They can be hereditary or caused by increased pressure in the veins and are typically more common in people who stand or walk for extended periods of time and generally become more common with age or pregnancy. They do not often cause medical problems, but can cause swelling, a feeling of heaviness, and fatigue. Many find them to be embarrassing and choose to have them treated cosmetically to recapture a youthful appearance.
Any cosmetic treatment, even an increasingly common one, is still a medical procedure. While spider vein care may seemingly be simple, it is important to be treated by a qualified physician. Health First Vascular & Vein Center physicians are highly-trained Surgeons and Interventional Radiologists specializing in leg treatments. Below are some of the treatments Health First Vascular and Vein Center experts provide.Sclerotherapy
This treatment uses an injection of a chemical solution, sclerosant, to damage the lining of the vein causing it to close and disappear. This procedure is quite simple and effective. Patients often comment that there is a slight burning or cramping sensation that is felt during the injection but this subsides in a few moments. Sclerotherapy generally does not require any recovery time and you will likely be able to walk immediately following the procedure. Avoiding strenuous exercise for a few days is typical and you may need to wear compression stockings for a period of time as directed by your physician.Laser Surgery
In this procedure, strong bursts of light are sent to the vein causing it to eventually fade and disappear. The results are not typically as strong as those achieved with sclerotherapy but can still be very effective. No incisions or injections are made and recovery is minimal. In some instances, redness, swelling, or further irritation may occur but this is rare.
